Architectural Asphalt Shingles: What Are They?

If you’re getting quotes for a new roof in the Chicago area, almost every one of them is going to list architectural asphalt shingles. Some contractors call them dimensional shingles or laminated shingles. They’re all the same thing, and they make up the large majority of the residential roofs we tear off and install across Cook, DuPage, Lake, and Will counties.

Here’s what they actually are, how they differ from the old 3-tab shingles, what they cost, and how they hold up to what our weather does to a roof.

The Basic Construction

An architectural shingle is built from two or more layers of asphalt-saturated fiberglass mat laminated together. The bottom layer is a solid base. The top layer has tabs cut into it in a staggered pattern and is glued down onto the base with hot asphalt sealant. That lamination is where the “dimensional” look comes from — the double thickness creates shadow lines that read like wood shake from the street.

The whole thing is coated in asphalt and surfaced with ceramic-coated granules. Those granules do the real work: they block UV, they give the shingle its color, and they’re the first thing to go when a roof starts failing. Under the granules, the fiberglass mat is what gives the shingle tear strength and holds the nail.

A 3-tab shingle, by comparison, is a single flat layer with two slots cut into it to create the appearance of three separate tabs. One layer, uniform thickness, flat appearance. That’s the whole difference in a sentence: architectural shingles have a laminated second layer, 3-tabs don’t.

Weight and Thickness

Architectural shingles run roughly 240 to 340 pounds per square (a square is 100 square feet of roof). 3-tabs run closer to 200 to 240. That extra material is why architectural shingles resist wind uplift better and last longer — there’s simply more asphalt and more mat between the weather and your decking.

It also means a bundle is heavier to carry up a ladder, and a full tear-off produces more debris. Not your problem, but it’s part of why the labor line on the estimate looks the way it does.

Wind Ratings — and Why the Fine Print Matters

Most architectural shingles carry a 110 mph wind rating out of the box, and many are rated to 130 mph when installed with enhanced nailing. That means six nails per shingle instead of four, plus a starter strip along the rakes, not just the eaves.

This matters here. We get straight-line winds off summer thunderstorms and long stretches of 40 to 50 mph gusts in March and November. When we come out to look at blown-off shingles, the failure is almost never the shingle itself. It’s the nailing. Nails driven above the nail line, nails overdriven through the mat by an air gun cranked too high, four nails where six were specified, or no starter strip on the rake so the wind gets under the first course and peels it back.

If a contractor is quoting you a 130 mph shingle, ask whether they’re doing the six-nail pattern and rake starter that the rating requires. If they aren’t, you have a 110 mph roof on paper and something less than that in reality.

How Long They Last in Chicago

Manufacturers print “lifetime limited warranty” on most architectural shingles. That’s a warranty term, not a lifespan. It’s prorated, it drops to a low percentage after the first ten years or so, and it covers manufacturing defects — not installation, not hail, not ice damming.

Realistically, an architectural shingle roof installed correctly with adequate attic ventilation gives you 25 to 30 years in this climate. Without adequate ventilation, we’ve seen the same shingle cook out in 15 to 18. A 3-tab, for comparison, is a 15 to 20 year roof here, and the last five of those aren’t pretty.

What shortens the number in Chicagoland specifically:

Freeze-thaw cycling. We can swing 30 degrees in a day in February. Asphalt gets brittle in the cold, expands in the sun, and does that hundreds of times per winter. Over decades it drives granule loss and cracking.

Ice dams. Snow melts off a warm attic, refreezes at the cold eave, and water backs up under the shingles. Shingles are water-shedding, not waterproof — they rely on gravity. Standing water behind an ice dam goes right past them.

Hail. We get it every few years, and it doesn’t have to be golf ball sized to matter. Dime and nickel sized hail bruises the mat and knocks granules loose. The roof doesn’t leak right away; it just ages faster from that day forward.

Impact-Resistant Options

Some architectural shingles are made with a modified asphalt (SBS-modified, usually) that stays flexible and absorbs hail impact instead of fracturing. These carry a Class 4 impact rating under UL 2218, which is the top rating.

Two reasons to consider them here. First, they hold up better in the hailstorms we actually get. Second, most Illinois insurance carriers offer a premium discount for a Class 4 roof — typically somewhere in the range of 5 to 20 percent on the wind/hail portion, depending on the carrier. Ask your agent for the number before you decide. The shingle upgrade usually runs 10 to 20 percent more than a standard architectural, and the discount can pay it back over the life of the roof.

Worth knowing: a Class 4 rating is a lab test result, not a guarantee. Big hail still damages Class 4 shingles. It just takes more of it.

What They Cost

In the Chicago market, a full tear-off and replacement with standard architectural shingles generally lands between $5.50 and $9.00 per square foot of roof area installed. On a typical 2,000 to 2,500 square foot roof, that’s roughly $12,000 to $22,000.

That’s a wide range because these things move the number:

  • Pitch. Anything over 8/12 requires roof jacks and slows the crew down considerably.
  • Stories. Three-story Chicago frame houses and steep Victorian rooflines cost more than a ranch in Palatine.
  • Layers coming off. Two or three layers of old shingles means more labor and more dumpster.
  • Decking condition. If we open it up and find rotted or delaminated plywood, that’s replaced at additional cost. A good estimate spells out the per-sheet price up front.
  • Complexity. Valleys, dormers, skylights, chimneys, and multiple roof planes all add flashing work.
  • Ventilation and ice barrier upgrades, covered below.

If a quote comes in dramatically under that range, look at what’s missing. Usually it’s ice and water shield, drip edge, new flashing, or a permit.

Ventilation Isn’t Optional

This is the part homeowners skip and it’s the part that determines whether you get 30 years or 17.

An attic needs balanced airflow: intake low at the soffits, exhaust high at the ridge. The general standard is one square foot of net free ventilating area for every 150 square feet of attic floor, or 1:300 when you have a vapor retarder and the intake and exhaust are balanced.

Without it, two things happen. In summer, attic temperatures climb past 150 degrees and slowly bake the asphalt out of your shingles from below. In winter, warm moist air from the house collects up there, condenses on the cold underside of the deck, and either rots the sheathing or melts the snow on your roof unevenly — which is exactly how ice dams form.

Common problems we find in Chicago-area houses: soffit vents that were blown full of insulation during an attic upgrade, painted-shut soffit vents on older homes, a ridge vent installed with no intake to feed it, or a mix of ridge vent and box vents that short-circuits the airflow. Any competent roofer should be looking in your attic before writing an estimate, not just measuring the roof from the driveway.

Architectural vs. 3-Tab: When Does 3-Tab Still Make Sense?

Rarely, on a primary residence. The price difference between 3-tab and architectural has narrowed to the point where the longer service life of an architectural roof makes it the better value in nearly every case. Manufacturers have been phasing 3-tabs out of their lineups.

Where we still install 3-tabs: detached garages, sheds, rental properties being prepped for sale on a tight budget, and occasional repairs where we’re matching an existing 3-tab roof that has plenty of life left.

Architectural vs. Designer/Luxury Shingles

Above architectural, manufacturers sell premium or “designer” laminated shingles — heavier, thicker, with more pronounced shadow lines, sometimes shaped to imitate slate or hand-split shake. They’re generally 50 to 100 percent more expensive than standard architectural.

They look better on the right house. On a stucco Tudor in Oak Park or a stone colonial in Hinsdale, the difference is visible from the curb. On a 1970s split-level, most people won’t notice. They don’t last dramatically longer than a well-installed standard architectural roof with good ventilation.

Color

Two practical points for this climate. Darker colors shed snow slightly faster and hide staining better. Lighter colors reflect more heat and run cooler in the attic — though with proper ventilation, the difference in shingle temperature is smaller than most people assume.

The bigger factor is that you’re living with this for 25 years. Get physical sample boards, look at them on your roof in daylight, and look at neighbors’ houses with the same color. Small chips in a showroom lie about how a full roof reads.

Signs You Need Replacement, Not Repair

If you’re reading this because something’s wrong, here’s the short list of what tells us a roof is done rather than repairable:

  • Granules filling the gutters and bare black mat showing on the shingles
  • Curling or cupping edges across whole slopes, not just one area
  • Cracking through the shingle body, especially on south and west exposures
  • Multiple leak locations rather than one
  • Shingles that crumble when handled — brittleness means the asphalt has dried out
  • The roof is 22+ years old and you’re spending money on it annually

A single leak around a chimney or a section of blown-off shingles on a 12-year-old roof is a repair. Widespread granule loss and brittleness is a replacement.

Storm Damage and Insurance

If your roof was hit by hail or high wind, document the date and get an inspection before you file. Illinois carriers are increasingly moving toward actual cash value settlements on roofs over a certain age, and some policies now carry separate, higher wind/hail deductibles. Read your declarations page and know what you’re working with before the adjuster shows up.

The Short Version

Architectural asphalt shingles are laminated, two-layer shingles that give you a dimensional appearance, better wind resistance, and roughly a 25 to 30 year service life in the Chicago climate. They’re the default choice for good reason. Whether yours actually reaches 30 years depends less on which brand you pick and more on three things: correct nailing, adequate ice barrier at the eaves and valleys, and balanced attic ventilation.

When you’re comparing estimates, those are the three items to compare. The shingle name at the top of the page matters less than what’s specified underneath it.
